The Concept of Urban Planning for the City of Bamiyan
By Hiro Yamagata
"Civilizations originate from green forests flourishing along rivers and
collapse with the loss of such forests."
Along with the beautiful river, Bamiyan developed as
a cross road of multiple cultures of east and west. Moreover,
Bamiyan, Afghanistan is one of the few places in the
world
where untouched nature and people’s life style
to cohabitate with nature are still preserved. Human
beings
in the present contemporary society has scarce opportunities
to observe and experience beautiful nature. Human nature
has not changed and remained the same. Nature is a cradle
which provides time and space for human beings to re-
stimulate our instincts and to recognize the way human
living should
be, that is, to live with nature. As our life style changed
with modern technology, our lives are geared toward more
and more convenience and comfort and lost contacts with
organic beings. As a result, we are surrounded by the
environment filled with concrete, asphalt, glass, and
plastic and other
artificial materials.
The basic theme of the urban planning for Bamiyan I
suggest is to preserve as much nature and traditional
living
environment as possible throughout the development
of the city and
further to make the Bamiyan Vallery into a kind of
forest by planting more trees of all kinds. Instead
of building
many roads, we limit the number of roads to the existing
ones and build private residences in the woods so that
they are kind of hidden under the branches of trees.
The houses will be made of mud brick with a modern
necessities inside. There should be no modern style
architecture
which
are abundant in other cities of the world. In principle,
tourist accommodation can be provided by increasing
the number of ingenious mud brick houses which will
be fashionably
decorated. We can also develop or expand an existing
market where both residents and tourists can buy necessities
and
souvenirs.
We suggest to take advantage of existing rich water
resource which brings fresh water throughout the village.
Potato
farms are to be cultivated along the river. These farms
will serve as a basis for agricultural tourism through
which tourists experience a life of farmer as well
as learn about agriculture and nature. The whole Bamiyan
valleys
will look like a huge oasis with thick forest with
hiking
trails. The chief colors of the village will be brown
of the mud and green of the trees. Every architecture
in the
Valley will be build with ingenious mud, wood, and
stones while avoiding the use of concrete, steal and
glass.
In the 21st century, we seek human contact which we
have less and less opportunities to have. People
who visit
Bamiyan from urban cities will crave for fresh unpolluted
air,
fresh green forest, and untouched nature of the Bamiyan
mountains. The most Intellectual people who are also
opinion leaders of the world are looking for a direct
contact with
ingenious people who know how to live with nature and
history. We can provide opportunity for such tourists
to enjoy nature
and build friendship with people of Bamiyan. The purpose
of their trip will be to develop friendship with them
and to experience hospitality which people in Bamiyan
can offer.
The mind-to-mind relationship developed through home-stay
programs and agricultural experiences attracts tourists,
especially from urban cities. This will be a completely
different style accommodations which serves a platform
for human communications and exchanges. In this plan, the whole village of Bamiyan will become
a sort of a laboratory equipped with research center
for geology, archeology, bio agriculture, and biology. |
