Thiruvananthapuram: While Chellanchy Bridge is slowly gaining popularity as a tourist spot, Vamanapuram block panchayath decided to introduce some other elements to attract more people. The view of the flowing Vamanapuram River along with the greenery caught the attention of people who stop at the bridge to click pictures. It has been recognized as a tourist site since the opening of the road to the public. From now on, stone benches and parks will be built on the bridge.
The 145.25 meter bridge connecting the two panchayats of Nandiyode and Kallara across the Vamanapuram River has solved the years of travel misery of the locals. By this road, one can easily get to Ponmudi in one and a half hours, which previously took three hours because the only possible road is via Nedumangad. Now passengers can reach Ponmudi via Attingal – Venjaramoodu – Nandiyode – Vithura.
An amount of Rs 25 lakh has been allocated for activities related to river protection and other projects including a park. Fences will also be installed on both sides of the bridge to prevent waste from being dumped into the river. Facilities including CCTV and a cafe will also be introduced.
Vamanapuram MLA DK Murali said that Rs 28.69 lakhs has been allocated for the modern development of the road on both sides of the bridge. He also added that the bidding process for the Muthuvila – Chellanchy – Kudavanad road has started.
“Seeing a good number of people visiting the bridge, we made the decision to do as much as possible to brighten up tourism. We can guarantee that the upcoming project will not harm nature as waste management programs will also be implemented. We have not yet selected the area where the park and cafeteria will be located,” said G Komalam, chairman of Vamanapuram block panchayath.
